Neuropathology is based at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, associated with the University Department of Clinical Neurology and adjacent to the NHS department of Neuropathology.
Our emphasis is on the relationship between genetically determined cellular architecture in the brain and large scale structural asymmetry which is abnormal in schizophrenia. We are particularly interested in studying gender.
We presently have collaborative links with Dr Manuel Casanova of the Medical College of Georgia USA, and Dr Mary Rutherford at the Hammersmith Hospital, London. (Click here for a more theoretical description of the neuropathology research undertaken at POWIC.)
Hardware and software
Our microscopy and image analysis lab contains 3 stereoscopic microscopes linked by digital cameras to a combination of two MS-Windows PCs running professional stereology software and one Unix Silicon Graphics Indy.
Our histology lab houses a further Olympus microscope, one Mac computer, sledge and rotary microtomes and facilities for slide preparation, section staining and immunohistochemistry. |
